Malvaizia was a wicked old witch.
She was as wrinkled as a walnut, and as grey as the grey mist;
her cold eyes were as unblinking as a lizard's;
for hair she had clumps of drab seaweed;
and her teeth gnashed like the whirr and grind of millstones.
She lived in a cave on the seashore with Ogo, her cheeky rascal of a son who liked stealing things.
When she sat with one foot on the sand and the other in the sea, she could put spells on both land and water.
She wore a pet octopus draped like a cloak around her craggy shoulders, its head behind her own like a hood.
Stuck in her belt of sea-serpent skin were the three sharpest things in the world: a needle made out of a crab's claw, a spindle made out of shark's teeth and a swordfish's sword.
